B for Brandon

Be Bold, Be Brave, Be Curious.

Brandon Barnard boasts over 30 years of experience as a photographer and director in the creative industry. His journey began in graphic design before evolving into the role of creative director at his own agency. Transitioning his focus, he delved into the realms of photography and directing, self-teaching along the way. Brandon believes in the value of trial-and-error, asserting that learning from mistakes has significantly shaped his advancement in the field. For him, photography is a dynamic art form that merges various storytelling styles with ever-evolving camera technology, fostering an ongoing process of learning that keeps him enthralled.

Proficient in portrait, advertising, commercial, sports, editorial, and on-location/street photography, Brandon effortlessly switches between photography and directing within the same project.

Particularly mindful when working on advertising campaigns and commercial photography, he feels a profound responsibility to his audience, striving to create iconic images that are bold, dynamic, and engaging. Establishing meaningful connections with viewers is his aim, recognising the importance of leaving a lasting impression.

I pride myself on my versatility as a photographer. With a genuine curiosity about the world around me, I find joy in adapting to various scenarios and capturing the beauty in every moment and subject I encounter.

In addition to his commercial portfolio, Brandon embarks on road trips across South Africa, using still images and film to convey narratives. Drawn to capturing people’s faces, whether in a studio or on location, he finds the art of portraiture both intimidating and exhilarating. Guided by Minor White’s quote, Brandon ensures that every photograph captures the essence of its subject, reflecting his belief that “no matter how slow the film, spirit always stands still long enough for the photographer it has chosen”.

Producing and directing documentaries such as “Every Face Tells a Story,” “Recyclers,” “Baptism,” and “Durban 031,” Brandon explores various aspects of African culture. He emphasises the importance of staying curious and truly seeing the world around him, driven by an insatiable pursuit of subjects and the excitement of discovering new angles, untold stories, or iconic images.
