Profoto B10 One-Light Setup | Portraits, Fashion & BMX Action Photography with Brandon Barnard

Share this article:

Brandon Barnard Photographer set out to prove that you don’t need a studio full of gear to achieve great photography. Just the right light, creative thinking, and a dash of pressure.

Armed with only the Profoto B10 and a zoom reflector, Brandon completed an entire shoot in just one hour. The goal was to  push the boundaries of what’s possible with a single light source in a real-world setting.

“I wanted to challenge myself by using just one light — the Profoto B10 with a zoom reflector — and see how far I could push it in a short space of time. With a few smart lighting placements, I was able to create a series of portraits, fashion-inspired poses, and even freeze some fast-paced BMX action, all within an hour,” says Brandon.

The shoot took place in Melville, Johannesburg, where Brandon changed a small urban space into a high-impact shoot zone. By carefully positioning the B10 and using its zoom modifier, he was able to sculpt light to suit each scenario — whether highlighting facial features in a close-up portrait or freezing a mid-air trick on the BMX bike.

The outcome is a dynamic visual showcase of what can be achieved with minimal gear and maximum intent.

A special thanks goes to Yans, who jumped in last-minute and brought serious energy and charisma to the shoot.
