High Fashion in the Most Dangerous City | Fashion Editorial Shoot in Joburg’s CBD

Fashion photographer and director Brandon Barnard takes us deep into the raw industrial heart of Johannesburg’s CBD, setting an exquisite black sequinned gown against the grime, metal, and machinery of a working panel beater’s workshop.
Watch the Behind the Scenes.
What began as a conceptual challenge soon became one of Brandon’s most striking editorials to date. A panel beater’s workshop is not simply a place of grime and metal, it is a sanctuary of repair and transformation, where broken things go to be restored, repainted, and made new again. Brandon drew a deliberate parallel between that mechanical restoration and the transformative power of high fashion. The result is a series of images built around a single powerful idea: The Finished Product standing amongst the Works in Progress.
Shot entirely on location in Johannesburg’s CBD, one of the most intense and visually charged city centres in the world, the editorial features rising models Fabienne and Danica, both dressed in Anna K. The clothing is precise, polished, and powerful. The backdrop is anything but. That tension is exactly the point.
Watch Fabienne
Fabienne moves through the workshop as though she owns every square metre of it. In a black sequinned gown, set against stripped car chassis and raw industrial metal, she embodies the editorial’s central idea, perfection emerging from chaos. The danger of the location is real. The work is serious. And somehow, that energy lives in every single frame.
Watch Danica
Danica brings a different energy to the same space, one that is quieter, more considered, and no less commanding. The workshop’s textures shift around her: rust, oil, exposed steel. This is editorial fashion photography at its most deliberate, not despite the location, but because of it.
From the individual model films to the full behind-the-scenes reel, all three videos capture the fusion of spontaneity and intention that defines Brandon Barnard’s signature approach to fashion photography.
