What’s in my “Photography” Bag

brandon barnard professional photographer whats in my bag

What’s in my “Photography” Bag What’s in my“Photography” Bag As a versatile photographer, I am always on the move. Whether shooting on location or in-studio — from corporate headshots and fashion editorials to advertising campaigns and fitness photography — what I carry in my bag is essential to capturing the right shot at the right time. Even when I’m off the clock, I never miss an opportunity to photograph the right image. Watch What’s In My Bag below https://youtu.be/10GDyKNwfEQ My Sealand backpack and reliable Nikon gear go wherever I go. In my photography bag, I carry a Nikon D850 and Z8, both fitted with 24–70mm lenses — perfect for a wide range of scenarios. I also pack an 85mm lens for portraits and a 14–24mm wide-angle lens for more dramatic shots. Battery life is never a problem — I keep eight Nikon batteries and a charger on hand. A waterproof memory card case, keeping everything protected. I carry three Profoto shoes for lighting setups, a Rode mic for clean audio when filming, and a few daily essentials: Bose earphones, a Stanley glass, phone chargers, a cutting knife, and my keychain. The list of what I pack: Cameras Nikon Z8 MirrorlessNew in My Bag Fast, reliable and built for high-performance shooting. My current workhorse. Nikon D850 DLSROldie but Goodie Tried, tested and trusted. It has delivered time and time again and never fails me. Lenses 14-24mm Lens Wide-angle lens for the dramatic shots. I use this mostly for landscape or crazy close up angles where i want to get distortion on a persons body or face. 24-70mm Lens My go-to lens to capture those iconic moments. Most versatlity for photography and video 85mm Lens My primary lense for portraits. I also use it for video because if gives the sharpest video picture quality. Audio, Power & Storage Video Micro Mic Crisp and clean audio for when I am filming BTS or interviewing clients. SanDisk Memory Card I always have enough storage on hand. Lack of space cannot be the reason for not capturing the perfect shot. Camera Battery I carry a minimum of 8 batteries. Always on the go and always powered up. What Keeps Me Going Stanley Thermoflask Hydration is crucial when shooting on location. Why not do it in style? Keeping me chilled on hot summer days and warm during cold south african winters. Sealand Backpack I love their ethos and brand values.  Plus I think they design pretty awesome bags. I hope to do collaboration with them in the future.I love the orange — a nod to Agent Orange Design, my design and production company. Bose Earphones Don’t buy cheap. Bose is by far the best on the market and their back-up service is excellent. I use them when doing video and just relaxing or getting into the mood to do a job.  Book a session with Brandon. He comes prepared! Corporate Headshot Light Signatures Soft Beauty Lighting Beauty lighting is not only for models. Using soft lighting Brandon brought out her striking eyes, freckled skin, and copper red hair, creating a portrait that allows you to appreciate her beauty and balance out with her assertive pose. Strong Iconic Portrait (Using one light) With one light and a dynamic powerful look this image grabs your attention by looking at you directly and. The inspiration for this image was taken from Steve Jobs to mimic a timeless and unforgettable headshot. Iconic African  One large soft light to bring out the natural tones of her skin. Soft glow highlighting her warm complexion creating a strong iconic headshot. Double Gel Lighting With the use of two colour gel lights Brandon created a graphic headshot. This was specifically shot keeping in mind that it would be paired with an article complementing it’s placement in their annual report. High Tech Portrait with strip lights(Gives that modern edge) A modern light setup was creating using 2 strip lights and 1 key-light on a dark moody background. The focus is on the face. Looking directly at the camera the lighting enhances his confidence and leaves a lasting impression with the viewer.  Solar Energy(Punchy keylight with a colour gel strip light) Once on location, Brandon saw an opportunity to introduce a creative element by using coloured strip lights that echoed the warmth of the sun. Instead of using a standard plain background he created a bold and iconic image connecting it to the company’s work by using the patterned backdrop, which mimics the look and feel of solar panels—creating a distinctive visual that tied in directly to their identity. Grace in light (Big soft light with strip light) Brandon used a soft light from the side to illuminate the face which gives an approachable feel. Capturing both strength and warmth. The warm background enhances the highlights of the lighting within this portrait. The Minimalist Power Shot Originally shot on a white background with a dramatic one-light setup. The background was darkened to bring out the contrast on the lighting and enhance the facial features clearly. Portraying professionalism and confidence. Great lighting alone isn’t enough. Brandon builds a connection with each subject—establishing ease and confidence from the first interaction. This trust allows people to show up as their best selves—genuine, confident, and ready to be seen. The result? A professional corporate headshot that doesn’t just look sharp—it feels authentic.
